Holidays should be a break from our busy and stressful lives, but the effort of packing and travelling to a destination can also be stressful. For some people taking your foot off the gas can result in feeling run down as the body is allowed to unwind. Add to that late nights, more alcohol and high sun exposure, which can make us unwell.
Here are some top tips to help you get the most out of your holiday:
• First of all, to support digestion and prevent infections, make sure you pack a good quality probiotic. If you are more susceptible to tummy upsets or you are travelling to an exotic place you should consider taking some antimicrobial herbs and botanicals such as garlic, oregano, grapeseed and clove to give you some additional protection.
• To protect your immune system eat lots of Vitamin C rich foods like leafy greens and berries and seafood for Zinc. Herbs such as elderberry and sage can give you that extra anti-viral support as well.
• Finally, protect your skin from damaging UV rays with antioxidants such as beta carotene (in orange coloured fruit and vegetables), vitamins E (almonds and avocados) and green tea. Make sure you use an organic, natural sun cream and rather than a regular after-sun lotion , you can use natural oils that are high in vitamin E, including olive oil, almond oil and shea butter. Sun on your skin is good for you but burnt skin is what causes melanomas.
• Keep alcohol to a moderate amount and intersperse with lots of water
